Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Training is an evidence-based method for suicide prevention for teens and adults to use in their communities and workplaces.

This course teaches participants to:

  • Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
  • Get help for themselves and learn more about preventing suicide
  • Identify the common causes of suicidal behavior
  • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
  • Get help for someone in crisis
Audience QPR Gatekeeper Training is for adults and teens who are ready to help prevent suicide in their community.

Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Instructor Training certifies adults to teach the QPR Gatekeeper training, an evidence-based method for suicide prevention, to teens and adults in their communities and workplaces.

This course teaches participants to:

  • Understand the nature, range and importance of suicidal communications and their importance in preventing suicide.
  • Identify groups at greatest risk of suicide and why QPR can work for them.
  • Train others as QPR Gatekeepers, how to save lives and help prevent suicidal behaviors.
  • Effectively promote suicide prevention in their own communities.
Audience The QPR Gatekeeper Instructor Training is for individuals who are ready to train other members of their community in suicide prevention methods.

Length In Person: 8 hours; Virtual: 2 - 3 hours of asynchronous prework/postwork +6 hours synchronous (live webinar). Either delivery type can be split into 2 sessions on different days.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Training teaches how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in youth.

This 8-hour training gives adults the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge and help connect them to the appropriate care. This course teaches participants to:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other supportive strategies
Audience YMHFA training is for teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, youth group leaders, parents, and anyone who works with youth.

Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) is an evidence-based training that teaches high school students in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades how to identify, understand and help their friends with mental health and substance use challenges and how to get the help of an adult quickly.

Before teaching this course, organizations must contact OSAH and complete all implementation requirements. Download the fact sheet for a full list of implementation requirements.

Instructors have a primary role to teach the Mental Health First Aid Course with fidelity to the core program model and provide key messages. This 3–5-day training certifies new instructors and gives them the skills they need to provide adequate training to their communities and organizations.

This course:

  • Addresses common mental health concerns among teens
  • Reduces stigma
  • Teaches teens a 5-step Action Plan to help their friends who may be facing a mental health challenge or crisis.
  • Teaches teens to involve a responsible and trusted adult as necessary.
Audience Individual schools or districts, organizations who partner with schools/districts to provide training, youth-serving organizations, and community sites that serve teens are eligible.

This American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies.

This program offers a choice of first aid, CPR and AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience and is offered in traditional classroom or blended learning (online learning with instructor-led skill session) formats.

CPI training programs provide evidence-based strategies and techniques for all levels of educational professionals, from district administrators through classroom staff, with a focus on the Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security of all students and staff with evidenced-based de-escalation and crisis prevention approaches.

The Trauma-Sensitive Schools Training Package offers a framework and roadmap for adopting a trauma-sensitive approach school- or district wide. 

The Training Package includes a variety of resources for understanding the core components of comprehensive school mental health, as well as engage in a planning process for implementation.

This course teaches participants to:

  • Strengthen policies and programs in school mental health to improve learning and promote success for youth.
  • Advance high-quality, sustainable comprehensive school mental health systems at school and district levels.
  • Train and support an understanding, promoting, and advancing young adult mental health and wellbeing
Audience Trauma Sensitive Schools Training is geared toward any youth-serving organization; mental health advocates, teachers, or anyone who supports keeping youth safe should take this training.

On-Demand Trainings

Calm: Counseling on Access to Lethal Means is a FREE online course that focuses on how to reduce access to the methods people use to kill themselves. It covers who needs lethal means counseling and how to work with people at risk for suicide.

This course teaches participants to:

  • Identify who could benefit from lethal means counseling.
  • Ask about their access to lethal methods.
  • Work with them and their families to reduce access.

Audience CALM is primarily designed for mental health professionals, however, anyone who plays a part in reducing youth access to lethal means, and who supports youth to keep them safe should take this training. Mental health licensure is not required to take this course.

The Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSR-S) is a simple six question assessment of suicidal thinking and behavior to help first responders, faculty and staff identify students in physiological crisis that might need immediate intervention.

This course teaches participants to:

  • Assess risk of suicide or harm
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage Self-Help and other supportive resources

Audience Because no mental health training is required, CSSR-S training is appropriate for first responders, teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, youth group leaders, parents, and anyone who works with youth.

Length The interactive CSSR-S Training Module can be completed in about 30 minutes. In order to receive certification, one must complete the entire course, pass the post-test with a score of 80% or higher, and answer the evaluation questions.

Classroom WISE is a 3-part training package on mental health literacy for teachers and school staff.

This course teaches participants:

  • Concrete, universal approaches to promoting student mental health and creating safe and supportive classroom environments
